So, this particular exploit is being quite a pain in the ass just from a freaking description. And for every one of you that has a certain "chain" limiting you to keep a computer running a shitty OS (or don't want to use a real OS), better ditch MS's stupid patch (which simply breaks icons for shortcuts) for something way better. (Dammit, I want to DBAN that desktop so much right now...)

The article above is from the Sophos security specialist group, which has detailed explanations on how the exploit works, in case you want to know. It also has a small tool that will intercept shortcut icon display, validate and then "give" control back to the windows shell when exploring shortcuts. It's free and works with XP SP2 unlike MS's stupid "patch", here it is.

Their tools are usually really useful, I've used them in the Conficker case, and the blogs they have have interesting posts about different security issues and really lulzy things like this: http://www.sophos.com/blogs/gc/g/2010/08...xplorer-6/
Yeah, the shitbox has had Arch installed because I felt like it. I wanted to do this as a testing ground to see if I could install Arch properly on hardware and everything is working well. The specs if you forgot:
- 700mhz Intel Celeron (Coppermine) Currently around 50-60% CPU usage.
- 512MB RAM Currently using around 186MB.
- 30GB IDE HDD
- DVD-ROM IDE drive
- SoundBlaster Live! Sound Card
- NVidia GeForce 2 MX/MX 400 graphics card - 32MB VRAM Currently using the nouveau driver.

I originally installed LXDE except that had some missing features so I tried XFCE, which I once tried on an Arch Live CD which worked perfectly. SLiM is the login manager and it is also working perfectly. All I need now is the following:
- A decent Conky script.
- A different network manager? I'm currently using the default but I'm sure there's a better one around. Also, the internet connection seems to be bad on this box compared to the laptop's wireless connection. I don't know if it's the NIC or the processor itself, so if it is the NIC I'll buy a new one.

I should install Arch on the laptop this week, if I can be bothered. Discuss.

He learned about programming with the help of Windows Help files, and got the hang of C, VB and so on (more than 10 languages in total) in about a year.
How Windowses Are Pirated In China

"Ghost Windows" is one of the most popular method of pirating operating systems (sometimes also including some Hackintoshes and Linuxes) in China, which was extremely convenient for users who found installing systems a heavy burden and are longing for a pick-up-and-use solution.

The very basis of the whole idea is three aspects: Norton Ghost (for disc image packaging), Sysprep (for system encapsulating and thus bypassing the issue of hardware differences between computers), and nLite or similar tools (for customizing, trimming and bundling).

Even outside China there're also some Ghost Windowses carried out by obscure pirate groups, but the situation is definitely not as rampant as in China. I did get to find some foreign alternatives of Ghost Windowses as examples below, in order to make things more understandable for you people who cannot do moonspeak.

Now I'll show you how easy it is to deploy a Ghost Windows into the computer with only a few clicks:

First you download an ISO file. It will be as big as 600~700MB for a Ghost XP, or 1~3GB for a Ghost 7, just the size so that it can be burned into a CD or DVD. It is made bootable and contains a few handy system maintenance tools. In most cases there'll be a Windows PE (Preinstallation Environment, an extremely simplified Windows with the most basic functions, pretty much like safe mode but with even more stuff) inside it as well, which is really useful especially when your previous system is already screwed up enough and unusable at all.

(Typical boot menu in a CD)

Quote:1. Automatically install to C:
2. Run PE minisystem
3. Quickly divide HDD into 4 partitions
4. Disk Manager (for manual partitioning)
5. Some random customized DOS environment
6. PartitionMagic
7. Manually launch Norton Ghost
8. RST memory examining (?)
9. Clear 2000/XP/2003 logon password (lol)
0. Some random HDD checking tools

The most important part of the disc is the GHO image which takes more than 80% size of the whole disc. You can either use the tools provided in the boot menu or inside PE, or, if you don't feel like burning the disc at all, extract it out in the HDD using WinRAR (7z, whatever) and use your own Ghost frontend. The point is to "restore" the Ghost image into the system partition, overriding all the existing crap there.

(A customized frontend I usually use)

Reboot after the restoration finish. Then you might come across this:

Lots of drivers are already bundled with the system and it'll automatically detect your hardware and install the right ones.

After one or two more self reboots and it's done. Do whatever you want now.

(Ghost 7s are quite similar.)

Pros of using Ghost Windowses:

Almost fully automatic;

Patches, upgrades, drivers and even some custom settings and optimizations are already integrated;

No need to worry about activation, WGA or any **** at all;

Some unnecessary system features are trimmed, especially those which consume a lot of HDD space;

Clean install, so you're rid of all the mess and rubbish ever before (it's like formatting).

Cons:

It annoys you a bit when software that you don't want gets bundled too (however you can remove those by yourself);

Malwares, viruses, backdoors and trojans might already be put into the system (so you must get it from the really trustworthy pirate groups lol)

Clean install, so no previous settings are kept.
